CELA: online bijeenkomst 'Empowering literary translators'

Donderdagavond 17 juni organiseert CELA (Connecting Emerging Literary Artists) de online bijeenkomst 'Empowering literary translators'. Vertalers Canan Marasligil, Daniel Hahn en Rafał Lisowski gaan onder leiding van Simina Popa in gesprek over hun ervaringen en presenteren initiatieven om het werk van de literair vertaler over het voetlicht te brengen.

CELA (Connecting Emerging Literary Artists) is een vierjarig Europees talentontwikkelingsprogramma voor prozaschrijvers, vertalers en literair professionals. Een selectie van 30 talentvolle schrijvers, 80 vertalers en 6 literair professionals krijgt de kans om een intensief traject te doorlopen, gericht op het ontwikkelen van vaardigheden, tools en een netwerk. In 2019 is de tweede editie van start gegaan.

About the speakers

Rafał Lisowski

Full-time English to Polish literary translator with about 15 years of experience and approximately 60 titles to his name, including literary fiction, young adult literature, fantasy, thriller, and non-fiction. Some of his translations include works by Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, Truman Capote, Colson Whitehead, Jon Krakauer, and Brandon Mull. He is a member of the Polish Literary Translators Association, currently serving as chair of the organization since 2020.

Daniel Hahn

Daniel Hahn is a writer, editor and translator, with about eighty books to his name. Recent translations include Jamás el fuego nunca by Chilean novelist Diamela Eltit, and a collection of Angolan short stories.

Canan Marasligil

Canan Marasligil is a feminist writer, literary translator, artist, editor and curator of cultural programmes, whose practice span from performing to making podcasts. She works in English, French, Turkish and Dutch, occasionally in Spanish, and she is active in the fields of literature, comics, cultural criticism and art. As an intersectional feminist who strives to challenge dominant narratives, she advocates for representation, equality and diversity. She has developed and launched the Creative Translators Workshop for the Read My World International Literature Festival, aiming to create a pool of diverse translators and multilingual storytellers to work with the festival.

Simina Popa

Simina Popa (1981) was born in Bucharest, Romania. She graduated from Portuguese Language and Culture Studies at the University of Bucharest. Portuguese language has been a steady partner in her professional life. Simina is translating Portuguese language authors since 2007, mostly novels, but also theatre and short stories. She is a member of ARTLIT (the Romanian Association of Literary Translators) and was involved in the first edition of the CELA project.
